ABOUT THE NAVAJO CHURRO SHEEP BREED
Churros, for short, are the primary breed of sheep that I tan the hides of. I choose to tan their hides to not only raise awareness of their presence in the Southwest, but also because their wool is absolutely gorgeous. I purchase hides directly from shepards in the Southwest.
Check out these resources below to learn about the history of Navajo Churro Sheep and the journey they’ve been on with Diné people.

Hi, my name is Mo!
I come from what used to be the tall grass prairies and Ponderosa woodlands of Colorado. In 2020 I began attending Prescott College in central Arizona, then took a transformative gap year in the rivers, mountains, and farmlands of California and Southeast Utah. I graduated in 2025 with a Bachelors of Art and Science in Environmental Studies and Adventure Education. I concentrated in Natural History and Interpretation in Southwest Studies.
I am passionate about plants and human kinship with them, which was inspired by growing up with my father who is a botanist. I am deeply invested in the local food movement, and my love of tanning hides weaves into this. Hides are an inherent “byproduct” of the meat industry and hunting process. By obtaining and tanning hides, I work to continue and honor the life of sacred beings who nourish us physically, and are part of so many cultural traditions. Most hides end up in the trash!
I work as a farmer, outdoor educator with youth, raft guide, yoga teacher, and many other roles throughout the year depending on when the water runs and cabbage needs to be harvested.
Sun Dog Crafts is the synthesis of my passions and desire to share this with others.
I am so grateful you’re here visiting my digital expression of art and education! I invite you to pass through the veil of the internet and attend a hide tanning workshop, or even just reach out to my contact page with questions.
Cheers!
Mo
